Designed for young people and others who might be making high-risk choices regarding substance use, this evidence-based program focuses on prevention, pre-treatment, and intervention.
To implement this program, Women of Colors (WOC) collaborates with area schools, churches, businesses, agencies, and other community partners.
Approved and licensed by the State of Michigan for substance use disorder services, WOC is well-suited to administer this program. WOC has twelve certified professional instructors, including three Recovery Coaches and one Certified Prevention Specialist.
These instructors create a safe place for participants to openly explore and inwardly examine how their choices affect their lives. Since people have reasons for their behaviors, self-evaluation and a new understanding can lead to positive change.
Women of Colors is committed to empowering and rehabilitating youth. Utilizing the Botvin LifeSkills curriculum—an evidence-based program developed by Gilbert J. Botvin, Ph.D.—WOC provides an 8-week course designed to address crucial life skills. Our curriculum covers Communication, Anger Management, Substance & Alcohol Prevention, and Healthy Relationships, equipping youth with the tools they need to make positive life choices.
The Botvin LifeSkills program is the most effective evidence-based training used in schools today for reducing substance abuse and violence. This training is comprehensive, dynamic, and developmentally designed to promote mental health and positive youth development. In addition to helping students resist drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, the LifeSkills training program effectively supports the reduction of violence and other high-risk behaviors.
Many at-risk youths are mandated by the Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Center to participate in our programs, but our services are not limited to just those youth. We proudly extend our services to other organizations seeking effective youth development solutions. If you are looking to guide youth towards a brighter future, we encourage you to contact us and learn more about how our programs can be tailored to meet your needs.
WOC’s support group chapter, titled “Stronger Together,” offers a 12-step recovery plan for bringing help, healing, and hope to those affected by substance use disorders. Our meetings provide an opportunity to share experiences, understanding, support, and current research regarding substance use disorders. Through these meetings, group members find encouragement and receive affirmation that they are not alone. The “Stronger Together” support group meets at 6:30 p.m. every first and third Tuesday of the month at the WOC headquarters, located at 3057 Davenport Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48602.
WOC created a documentary titled Hope Is Real, a documentary about two local, diverse families who overcame drug addiction. Part one of the documentary targets middle and high school students, while part two gives parents tips for what to do if they suspect their children are using drugs. WOC shows this documentary at schools and other venues.
“Being part of Women of Colors has expanded my understanding of substance abuse prevention and the importance of bringing those services into the community. Even on a personal level, it makes me think about the choices I’ve made in my life, the choices I continue to make, and how I need to improve.”
– Vera Harrison
“I really love our Prime for Life program. The messages that are conveyed, it’s an evidence-based program — you can see the lightbulb go on with the groups that we work with, so it’s cool to see the impact that comes from that program.”
– Leslie Eschenbacher
