Health Advocacy

Project ASSERT is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program that uses motivational interviewing to encourage patients and family members to seek care for risky substance use and to intervene with those who struggle. Through Project ASSERT, Women of Colors (WOC) Peer Support Specialists help patients access primary care, clinical preventive services, and treatment for alcohol and substance use disorders. 

WOC’s Peer Support Specialists also help patients connect to the Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority (SCCMHA) network of treatment providers and teach patients to use the Crisis Intervention and Mobile Response Services. In addition, the Peer Support Specialists help consumers navigate the intake process.  Furthermore, they will follow up with consumers after emergency department visits and after psychiatric crises.
